Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1-Channel Home Theater System Great entry level system

great deal, (What's this?) Overall I am very happy with my purchase. I read the other reviews here before buying this system. After setting the system up, you do have to experiment some to get the best setting for your set up. I won't re-state the many good things already said here about this system. One thing I will add is that some said they had issues with the deep color being used on the PS3 when using this system. I have a PS3 and only use it to play bluray (no games). When using the deep color setting, I had no issues. I did have to adjust some of the settings on my PS3 to get 7.1 output to the surround sound system though. Very happy with my purchase.
Worth every penny., (What's this?) I had a speaker bar previously but decided to go with more sorround sound. These speakers sound great!!! And, price was very affordable. It was worth every penny.
Great Product and Great Value!, (What's this?)
Excellent Sound System, Resolved issue with PS3, (What's this?) I come from Logitech Z5500 to this unit and have this system for two weeks now and am really happy with it. Z5500 definitely has more powerful Subwoofer, but variety of audio and video inputs on this system makes it a better choice for me.
My PS3 and DVD player are both connected through HDMI to receiver and then by HDMI to my Panasonic TV.
Super Home theather, (What's this?) Very nice system - need banana plugs makes wiring much easier - need to read manual completely to operate - many settings and options to try out the sound you like best - the best stereo I ever had - works nice on low sound level or high you don't have to blast it and get complaints from neihbors - bass is excellant and all channel ajustments make it easy to set volume on each individual speaker - the price of $360 is great for this - all other prices were $500. Highly recomend this sale.
5400 Great Quality + Affordability, (What's this?) The Onkyo 5400 (HTIB) is a great value for a number of reasons; it is almost plug and play out of the box with the "color coded" speaker wires. Using HDMI wiring keeps things so simple also. The sound quality is crisp and with the 120 watts powered sub woofer it kicks in all the bass you really need for movies, soundtracks or music. I can also play i-Pod Touch/Phone with ease with the 5400.
Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1, (What's this?) I received my system around 3 weeks ago and have just now installed it. It was not a fun project but that is not because of the system. I would recommend this system to any of my friends that were looking for a truly outstanding hometheater system in a box. The audio quality is excellent, far better than what I was expecting for the price. The auto audio calibration aspect does an outstanding job as well. I give HT-S5400 7.1 a thumbs up, highly recommended out of the box hometheater solution at an excellent price.
Great entry level system, (What's this?) Purchased this system for my basement big screen TV set up mainly because of previous reviews on Amazon and was not disappointed. System was easy to set up; aided by the color coded wiring and the automatic sound adjusting feature. Now getting very good sound from system for movies and kids video games; well worth the money.
Sounds good, but what an ordeal, (What's this?) After a great deal of research I ordered the S5400 and had it delivered in a couple of days. Great, so far.

It's a bit of work to set up with hiding speaker wires, etc. Initially, it sounded great, but within a day, the screen on my 65-inch Panasonic 3D TV began flashing to white static, sometimes four or five times a minute. I tried new latest-generation HDMI cords, but it didn't help. It started with my Panasonic 3D Blu-ray player (I never even used the 3D feature), but it soon was flashing to white static with the Xbox also. Eventually, the receiver just shut down and flashed something about checking speaker wires. I followed all the directions in the manual, restrung speakers, disconnected and reconnected all speaker wires, but that didn't help and soon the receiver wouldn't even turn on.

Okay, that's Onkyo's fault, not Amazon's. So I sent it back and Amazon sent another one... a week lost here.
Peter's Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 revies, (What's this?) This is the first step in my review process. I have the unit set up and I like it very much. The only problem I have encountered is on some TV channels (a few) the sounds break up. I have read of this in other reviews. My temporary solution is as follows:
I have AT&T Uverse. In setup, sound options I have changed the sound from digital to stereo.

  • 4 HDMI inputs and 1 output, with HDMI Support for 3D, Audio Return Channel, Deep Color, x.v.Color, LipSync, and more
  • Easy to use On-Screen Display (OSD) via HDMI
  • Direct digital connection of iPod/iPhone via front-panel USB port
  • Stereo sound at 80 watts per channel
  • Advanced Music Optimizer for compressed digital music files

  • 4 HDMI inputs and 1 output, with HDMI Support for 3D, Audio Return Channel, Deep Color, x.v.Color, LipSync, and more.Easy to use On-Screen Display (OSD) via HDMI.Direct digital connection of iPod/iPhone via front-panel USB port.Stereo sound at 80 watts per channel.Advanced Music Optimizer for compressed digital music files. Step up to 7.1-channel home entertainment with the Onkyo stamp of quality. The HT-S5400 gives you the flexibility to harness the two extra front-height channels of Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Now movies, games, and music come alive with atmosphere and realism. When it comes to set-up, Audyssey 2EQ ensures the surround soundstage is adjusted to the proportions of your living room. And thanks to the system’s HDMI functionality, you can take advantage of Onkyo’s convenient overlaid on-screen display to adjust settings with a minimum of fuss. Naturally, the receiver’s four HDMI inputs also handle 3D video and high-def audio from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other connectivity highlights include a handy front-panel USB input that lets you send a clean digital signal from your iPod/iPhone to the receiver, and front-panel analog A/V inputs for easy connection of a game console or camcorder. To provide greater bass impact without taxing the receiver, the package includes an independently powered subwoofer.

Belkin AV20000B03 PureAV Blue Series Digital Optical Audio Cable, 3Ft Good reliable, economical product

Works Like A Charm, (What's this?) I bought this to go with the Gefen Digital Audio To Analog Audio Converter in order to get audio from my Apple TV 2 to a DVI TV. The converter came with a Toslink patch cable, but it didn't work. I'd ordered the Belkin one not knowing a cable was included, and it's a good thing. The Belkin works perfectly.
closeout, never dissapointed., (What's this?) something about belkin cables, their soupleness makes me feel better about spending more usually, but at $5 primed each its a steal!

these are pretty much only useful as component interconnects at 3 feet which is fine, because thats what the vast majority of end users buy these for.

Optical is wonderful, the cables are great quality and thats that.
Great cable!, (What's this?) Nothing but good things to say about this digital audio cable. I was a little worried when I read that people were having trouble with the cable making a good connection. I went for it anyway.
Belkin Fan, You can't go wrong with a Belkin. The 3' cable however is pushing the limit. We have a small entertainment center, but it was pretty tight reaching the bottom shelf where the Xbox is.
Good reliable, economical product, (What's this?) There's not much you can write about a connector cable, especially if it does its job well! This cable does its job, and does it well. The cable feels durable, the ends are well formed and I did not have any trouble with the connections.
Awesome, This is a very great optical cable the sound quality is better than what i expected to get for this price. Belkin is a trusted brand and good in manufacturing cables. The cable is as good as those high end brand that i compared. Lastly, the this cable is recommended for those who want good quality but cheap price.
It fits just fine, (What's this?) Having read a few reviews that complained that this optical cable didn't fit snuggly, I was a little worried that I'd experience the same problem. But I connected my new Harden Kardin receiver to my new Pioneer 301 disk changer, and the fit is perfect and snug. Also, I don't think I'm imagining it, the sound is better with the optical connection.
Nice cable, good price!, (What's this?) Got this cable for under $5 during a lightning deal. Compared to the 2 other optical cables that we have, this is a much better build quality (The others came with products, so they weren't very expensive). This cable has caps for the optical ends that are connected to the cable itself, so no losing them. I didn't experience any fit issues like others have. I used it to connect a PS3 and an Onkyo surround system. Obviously its only 3 ft, so don't buy it and expect longer, but that was all I needed so I give the cable 5/5 stars.
Works perfectly, (What's this?) I've only had this installed a couple of days, but working perfectly. Good construction, I like the end-caps (not ever optical cable seems to have these), and it does what it is supposed to.
Works well, (What's this?) I needed this cable to solve a problem for my dad's audio system and this was perfect. I was having a really difficult time finding this sort of cable locally, so I went onto Amazon and decided to give this particular cable a shot. It seems like a quality, durable cable and it has performed as expected.

Technical Pro 72-RX35U 800-Watts TP Pro Digital Home Receiver with iPod Input No stars

Low quality receiver I have ever used, (What's this?) Pros: A lot of practical feature, e.g., two Mic input with echo, tone and volume adjustment, USB and SD audio support.

Cons: Low output power. 1000W is way too much misleading. At most 40W. It cannot drive my Sony S6000 speakers. The problem of low output power is the unacceptable background noise. The USB audio gives more background noise than MP3 port, both of them are not acceptable. The Micphone sometimes has saturation problem and gives noise at high volume.

I am not a fan of HIFI but I would say the sound quality is really really not acceptable.
No stars, (What's this?) It was a piece of junk, stuck it back in the package to return 10 minutes after I set it up. No digital display on tuning, felt as solid as a CrackJack prize. I live in a remote area, but even by the lowest standards, tuning was weak. Also, given its features, it was HUGE. Extra credit to B&H for taking it back quickly and no questions asked.
Worth Every Penny, (What's this?) Let me summarize: This is an inexpensive sound solution with reasonable power to push to medium to small speakers. If you have a set of large power hungry speakers you probably want to go with something more mainstream for brand and a much increased cost.

Having said all that I must say I love this amp and have had it for a few months and it has been worth every penny.

If you can get it for under a $100.00 bucks its a steal.
CRUDE, BUT GOOD., (What's this?) THIS RECEIVER IS NOT BAD FOR THE MONEY IT IS CRUDE BUT GOOD HAS A VERY CLEAR SOUND AND GOOD BASS REPRODUCTION, THE TUNER IS VERY BASIC BUT BEING SO BASIC IT CAN TUNE AND LOCK ON DISTANT STATIONS AND NOT DRIFT,THE AMP IS NO WAY NEAR 800 WATTS IT IS CLOSE TO MAYBE 80 WATTS. THIS UNIT IS NOT BAD FOR THE MONEY BUT I WOULD NOT TRADE A GOOD ONKYO, OR SHERWOOD FOR THIS UNIT. A GOOD STARTER AMP IT IS. GOOD BUT CRUDE.
2 units, both bad., (What's this?) I bought the 1st unit and when it came I "bench tested" it by setting it on the table and hooking up 2 speakers. It seemed to work great with the exception of the tuner being very touchy (more on that later). I then went to place it in my Entertainment center and when I plugged it back in I smelled hot electronics. When I turned it back on there was electrical feedback coming thru the speakers and there was no bass to speak of. I exchanged that unit for another and when it arrived I did the same bench test and it was giving electronic feedback right out of the box. That unit was returned and exchanged for a different brand altogether. Not a good experience at all. If not for the excellent customer service I've received from J&R Music World I would be really mad.

The tuner is a manual dial you have to adjust by making out a small mark on the knob and reading the frequencies in small print around the perimeter of the knob. It was very touchy and required very fine adjustment to bring in what would normally be a very strong station. Once tuned in the mark on the knob did not match up with the correct frequency zone printed around the perimeter for the station tuned in.
    junk, (What's this?)
Tacky if not trash, Used for three months when it started emitting a strong odor like burning tar. J&R referred me to the manufacturer who sent me a warranty form (I found the original) which required inclusion of a check or money order for $29.95 and prepay the shipping to return the unit. I think I will cut my losses and throw it in the dumpster.

The tuner is awkward to tune and drifts. SDCard playback had s slight hum.
BASSA-CABASSA, (What's this?) bass and sound quality rate a 5. could not connect a turntable, tape recorder-player rated a 2. other hook-ups ipod and such are great. rate 5.
To many flaws!, (What's this?) Well i could tell that this was not 800 watts, i'd say some where in the range of 200-300.
get what you pay for, exactly, (What's this?) I understand that for under a hundred bucks, you cannot expect much. That is what I got. It works most of the time. Some of the buttons have to pushed hard for it to react. It froze up a couple times while setting up and had to be turned off and restarted to function. With my speakers, it has alright sound, but figured out that i needed more hookups for other devices. Oh well, it works for now until I can get a better unit.

    Pyle Home PDIC60 250-Watt 6.5-Inch Two-Way In-Ceiling Speaker System (Pair) Pyle PDIC60 - housing is cheap

good for the price, (What's this?) it is a good speaker system for the price but the install manual is not user friendly at all. it does not tell you how to take the grill out of the frame. i tried to call tech support and was on wait for 1 hour at which time i hung up. i finally got someone and he made me feel like i was a dummy. you have to pry the grill out he said. why didn't the instuctions tell me that. please fix it for the next customer. thank you.
    Good Value, (What's this?)
Great Sound for the $, (What's this?)
Excellent, (What's this?) For the price you would think that these are cheap and would sound horrible but for the average person these speakers are excellent I bought 2 sets and they sound great. If you were to buy these speakers from the pyleaudio.com website these are $100.00 speakers so I think these are pretty good deal if your looking for some inexpensive in-ceiling speakers.
Pyle Celing Speakers - Good Buy!, (What's this?) Purchased these to install in our new construction home. Installation was easy with the template provided. They fit nicely against the ceiling and the white color matched our ceiling and did not need painting. The sound is pretty good for this price point and overall we are pleased and would recommend these ceiling speakers.
Amazing For The Price, (What's this?) I was looking to get speakers for a 16x18 size media room in my basement. I have already experienced shopping for ceiling speakers for my upstairs common room. I went with very high end speakers having a company install "speaker craft" along with a sonos system. I paid $8,000 dollars and although they did an amazing job and the speakers can make the house shake; I did not have the same financing options for the basement. I took my chances with these speakers thinking that they were so cheap that if they didn't work, I can just give them away. It turns out that they speakers are awesome. I definately hesitate to turn them up to see what they can do as I am sure they would blow. But believe me when I tell you that I have them loud enough to impress most people who have not alerady heard the system I have upstairs. This was a killer deal and I wanted to share it with everyone!
It is nice for a change to get a good deal on quality sound.
Wow, great sound at a low price., (What's this?) I installed these speakers in our bedroom, master bath and laundry and was amazed with the stereo sound. Liked them so much I installed them in our pool shelter ceiling. They are very smooth and hold a high volume without distortion. At this price you can't go wrong if you are looking for casual listening.
Pyle PDIC60 - housing is cheap, (What's this?) Purchased 3 pairs of these speakers for 5.1 system. Upon opening package, 3 of the 6 speakers have cracks in the plastic housing where there is a screw in place. Seems that when they screwed the screws in, they screwed it either too tight or the plastic is simply too cheap and cracked. Its very obvious, so it's unfortunately there's no Q/C. When i actually use the speakers i will update my review.
    awesome speakers, (What's this?)
Exactly what we were looking for, (What's this?) They don't make the speakers anymore that we already have in the house, so we needed something good looking and good sounding, these are both.

Samsung HTD6500W 5.1 CH 3D Blu-Ray Home Theater System Amazon Customer Service SUCKS

Solid system, but no headphone jack!, Overall a very solid product. Easy to set up and the sound quality is very good. Able to use my Ipod touch and Xbox easily with the system. I also really enjoyed the app selection - very easy to use.

Only drawback that I can find is that there is no headphone jack. I can't believe that Samsung would make a home theater system without one. Very inconvenient if you want to be able to listen to the system with headphones.
Does what it's supposed to and does it very well!, (What's this?) The sound is amazing, the subwoofer is deep, the dynamic range is outstanding.
    Love it!, (What's this?)
The Infamous "Stopped Playing Blu-Rays" Issue, (What's this?) I purchased this unit as a bundle to the Samsung 60" D6000 HD TV for xmas. The complete home theatre system was what was looking in a clean install, one unit does all, fashion.

The initial set up was seamless, no problems at all. Loved the speaker sound room calibration. It actually works quite well. Smart TV on the BD player seemed to work fine, although, I have not spent enough time on it.

The "BD Wise" connection between the unit and TV works perfectly.

The "All Share" function (since I have a Samsung Infuse 4G phone) was disappointing. It connected to the TV and home theatre fine, but if I actually tried to stream a song or even a movie, it just couldn't do it. It was as if I was trying to stream over a 2G or EDGE network, and I have a Wireless N network.
Samsung HT-D6500W, (What's this?) My initial response to this unit was WOW! Great picture, great sound. Set-up was not bad but the TV sound from a Samsung TV did not work with the one HDMI cable as documented. Added the Optical cable and the sound worked. Then the wireless surround speakers started to fail intermittently and now permanently.
Good System - Good Value, (What's this?) I received this two days after ordering it from Amazon with standard shipping. I was amazed. The unit was easy to set up (it took more time to assemble the rear speaker stands I ordered!).

Everything worked as expected - the "wireless" rear speakers, the DVD player (both regular and Blue Ray), the 5.1 surround sound, FM tuner, etc. A bonus - somehow my Panasonic Viera TV "synched" with this Samsung unit. This makes my use of these two compnents together more seamless.

As you might tell, I am not an audiophile. We just wanted decent sound, Blue Ray capability, and the ability to get to internet content providers. So this system met our expectations, and maybe exceeded them a little. The drawbacks I found limiting my review to four stars include thin gauged and short speaker wires and a sub-woofer that is good for music and OK for movies.
Sound cut in and out, (What's this?) I got of these about 6 weeks ago. It turned mill second sound drops from Directv in 5 to 10 second drops. I exchanged it (Amazon was good about that). The new one did the same thing. I returned it. Now I'm going to try the Yamaha.
Could be better, (What's this?) Its a good HT. great sound. comes with a mic so you can calibrate based on your room setting.
wireless rear speakers still need wiring but far less than having to run cables from the HT unit all the way to the back.

The Apps!!! OMG, they suck!! The 2011 samsung TV comes with such good apps, left me wondering why this HT couldn't run the newer better apps...
The youtube app is terrible, netflix hangs once so often, Pandora and vudu are the only apps that worked well so far.
The apps on my Samsung TV are far superior. I hope Samsung upgrades the software on this HT.

Solid sound performance with poor built in software... Samsung has a lot to learn from Apple.
Amazon Customer Service SUCKS, Ok, so I order over $3k worth of stuff this week. Including the HTD6500W. Amazon puts a hold for the funds at my bank not once, but 3 times. It looked like a great price until they charged me three times for it!!!!
Needless to say, Customer service couldn't do anything for 24-48 hours...even though I am a prime member and have spent quite a bit with Amazon over the years. All they had to do was fax a stupid release to my bank...they had plenty of time as it was around 11am their time.

THIS IS MY LAST PURCHASE FROM AMAZON....I even cancelled some items that hadn't shipped yet...

Amazon you have screwed me for the last time!

On the other hand...I went to HH Gregg to check this system out and it totally rocks-very clear even at high volume levels...guess where I am going to buy it now that I have cancelled my order with Amazon....at least once they release the $1365.
What idiot......, (What's this?) decided that the only way (as far as I can determine so far) to play videos via the iPod dock is to force me to disable the HDMI-CEC link? I can understand the composite output requirement considering the way iDevices are locked down. I need CEC enabled to use the AVR function on my TV. With CEC enabled, I'm unable to select the composite input on the TV; it jumps to HDMI. It's a major pain to go through the settings and re-enable CEC every time I want to listen to audio from the TV through the system. -2 stars, Samsung/Apple.

That not withstanding, my experience so far has been pleasant and setup was rather easy.

I had to set my AP to broadcast the SSID to get the wifi to link up. One would think this to be a non-issue as long as wifi has been around.

Polk Audio PSW505 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) Lots of boom

Deep, (What's this?) Very pleased with the sub. It located in a big open room, and the notes hit low. For perspective, it makes every wall shake in my 2,000 sq ft home. I'm tempted to get another.
Amazing Sub!, (What's this?) So I decided to upgrade my stereo from those all-in-one's, finally. Decided to piece together a receiver/speaker combination and this sub just made my stereo sound better than anything I could possibly imagine. Seriously sounds better than any stereo I have ever heard and sounds as good as the inside of a club, if not better. Deep, quality base at any volume, turn this sucker up and you will be blown away by the base. Standing 10 feet away from it my pants were vibrating, seriously perfect base.

    System specs...
    Onkyo TX-NR509 Receiver
2-TSi400 Polk Audio front floor standing speakers
    Polk Audio PSW505 subwoofer

This sub is simply AMAZING. I had the other speakers working without the sub for a couple weeks and it sounded great, but was missing deep, quality base. This sub leaves me with NO REASON to add anything to my system. I use it mainly for music so I'll get surround sound eventually but this is the best combo of speakers and receiver I have ever seen.

Polk Audio is very high quality and I HIGHLY recommend this sub.
Awesome Sub, for great price, (What's this?) This sub is my first purchase of a serious standalone subwoofer, before all i ever owned was all-in one type systems around the middle of the price range. With that in mind this thing is blowing away all expectations i had. This is the first woofer i have had that doesn't sound like its is going to blow up or have any odd buzzing sounds etc. very clean and tight.

Music sounds awesome, movies are spectacular, even my toddlers shows have got a good lower range :-) I haven't even went all out yet with this woofer and its still impressive.

Construction feels solid and has a nice clean look, also plenty of options on configuration right on the back of the woofer, so it will fit most needs.

So far its been a great purchase.
Can't decide between the PSW10 and the PSW505? Read!, For the longest time I was trying to decide between the PSW10 and the PSW505. The PSW505, on sale, was about twice as much as the PSW10 and offered much better specifications, both on paper and in real world testing.

What I always debated, though, was if I really needed the oomph of the PSW505 and if I did, would I also be willing to live with the larger size. Like always, I let my frugal side win and opted for the PSW10. Once it arrived, I swapped out my old Logitech Z2300 subwoofer (which, in all honesty, wasn't that bad to begin with) and began to listen.

Instantly, I was disappointed. The port noise under 40hz was absolutely terrible at medium to high volumes. I always thought that since the frequency range cut off fairly high, port noise wouldn't be a problem, but boy, was I wrong.
    Killer Sub, (What's this?)
Amazing Subwoofer For The Price !!, (What's this?) Bought this with part of my Christmas money . I got lucky and got this sub for 169.99 . All I can say is wow ! sounds great with music and great with home theater . Other choices I were looking at were the
BIC F12 ,BIC PL-200, Lava LSP-12 . But for the price this was the best deal and couldn't pass it up . Glad I didn't this sub is almost too much sub for me i live in a 850 sqft apt and I have the volume gain only on the second notch above the lowest setting and this sub still is extremely loud .
All Smiles, (What's this?) I don't have anything else to compare this against except an old 8" Sony 100 watt sub that I replaced with this Sub.
I can't imagine anything better and if there is, WOW! I have this sub running off a Sony STR-DH820, paired with Polk Audio 40s on the front, CS20 center, older Sony satellite speakers for the surround. The front Polk 40's are bi-amped. I have the volume set at 50% on the sub and when running the auto calibration feature on the Sony receiver it set the subwoofer volume at -3 and it still loves to be heard.
The Beast!, (What's this?) This sub is a savage beast!!! Teamed with pair of TSi500 fronts and Yamaha RX671 and this bad boy shakes the rafters man... It is bad to the bone - highly recommend. The Amazon price with free prime shipping cannot be beat. Excellent value for the money.
Lots of boom, (What's this?) I am very satisfied with my purchase. The sub really hits hard. Nice and low decibels. Great for games and music also.
Polk PSW505 subwoofer review, (What's this?) The sub has been hooked to my system for about 4 weeks. I am very satisfied with it. Fast shipping.

Yamaha YHT-S400BL Home Theater System (Black) small but good!

small but good!, (What's this?) Very happy with the sound bar/receiver. The receiver gives out deep bass while the bar really enhances the listening experience. Obviously this is not surround sound but for the price you can't go wrong.
Great bedroom piece, (What's this?) Not much to say except that I love this thing. It has great sound and is a perfect fit for a bedroom.
Nice but.., (What's this?) this was a gift and it didnt work out.
Reason why is that the Sub/reciever is rather large.
Due to the sub and reciever combination the instructions say it needs to be on a shelf by itself.
Perhaps if we had a bigger TV stand it may have worked out, but not being able to put the cable box or DVD player on the same shelf caused an issue.
Does a great job as a soundbar!, (What's this?) I've had this soundbar for almost a month now and wanted to spend a good amount of time listening to it before I wrote up a review.

For the price this is an awesome soundbar. The setup was easy and quick; for some reason I expected the subwoofer to be wireless too, but no biggie. The soundbar itself is a-lot smaller than I had initially expected, I knew it was thin but I didn't expect it to be that thin. The sound that came out of those small drivers was bigger than I expected too.

The subwoofer + receiver is nice and convenient but don't plan on expanding your sound system with it.

The subwoofer and soundbar are paired nicely, the bass is generally where it should be. I've had a Sony home-theater-in-a-box which had bass that was muddy and overwhelming, this was a pleasant change. The subwoofer level is adjustable too which is very convenient for movies.

TV: Compared to tinny sounding TV speakers, this does an awesome job. There is a big spectrum of sound TV speakers just can't produce and this Yamaha setup does a good job of filling that in. The sound is good, voices can be a little nasal sounding but it's not super noticeable. The Uni-Volume feature is a big plus, it crunches some of the dynamic range but works as intended keeping the commercials at the same volume as the show you're watching.

Movies: In terms of immersing you into the movie, this system does a good job. I use the Extended Stereo mode which the makes the sound more room filling (works well for tv too). However I don't use the Surround Sound mode, you need a small living room with walls relatively close to the soundbar for this to really work at all. I tried it but thanks to the walls being so far away the sound was scattered and not well imaged.

Music: This was a little bit disappointing, I was expecting music to perform as well as TV or movies do but it just doesn't. I Listened to Elbow's album "The Seldom Seen Kid" and immediately noticed a lack of clarity and imagery in the sound.
Very good system, (What's this?) Its a very good system for those who are bothered with home theater wiring (and want to avoid spending on wireless speakers).
However its not a real surround system and neither do they promise it to be.
This is not as simple as people make it seem, (What's this?) I do very much appreciate the people who took the time to explain the upgrade to the firmware. but the truth is that this device will not function in HDMI mode so what is the use of it. As an end-user, I am no slouch with non-intuitive devices but this was a wasted day and a half. The byzantine upgrade process requires you to buy the digital optical cable. Go to the website and download the manual. Really. then download the firmware. The firmware would not update - I burned a cd of it on three devices to be sure.
Yamaha should be embarrassed that they could not offer to send a cd.
Nice compact unit, (What's this?) Out of the box, the sound sucks wind bad.
yamaha sound bar, (What's this?) This sound bar has great sound but I was ready to send back because it will not work with my Dish remote. I did purchase a Logtic remote from Costco and it will turn on TV, sound bar, and blue ray player so I decided to keep it. So if your trying to have only one remote this is the only way I found it would work.
Solid Choice, (What's this?) I did a lot of research and would not consider myself a very technical listener. Having said that I do like my music and movies loud and clear.
Great option for 2nd room HT/FM, (What's this?) Exactly what I was hoping for from the sound bar category and expecting from Yamaha given their reputation. Not true surround but the next best thing, adds FM receiver with decent sensitivity (even with included antenna, at least for my area) and extraordinary sound given the minimalist footprint. I'm used to a 5.1 ch Pioneer Receiver driving a Bose Acoustimass 12 (HT) and 501's (2ch) and was worried about a steep drop in performance in new environment/category. Samsung TV Samsung UN46D6000 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV (Black) w/ Toslink out a great match. At $350 nothing else in the category matches up. (Don't forget the Mediabridge - Toslink Cable - Optical Digital Audio Cable - 6ft.

Samsung Electronics HT-D6730W Home Theater System Nice

Great system great price easy to set up, (What's this?)
Awesome sound, (What's this?) Really brings movies to life.
A stellar and far beyond superb system for the money!!, (What's this?) I'll sum this up in two words..."HOOOOOLY SCHNIEKE!!". I installed an "earlier" version (7.1ch HT-C3760W) of this system in my girlfriend's home with her 47" Sony Bravia 3D HDTV. On this "C" model, the two front speakers are not built-in to the tower. I knew that once I heard hers I HAD to have one of my own. I searched for and compared different brands; Panasonic, Sony, and Onkyo to name a few, that would deliver the same quality sound and with the same or similar features as this Samsung. Each paled in comparison.

I found the 7.1ch HT-D6730W system here and KNEW it would be well worth buying.
Nice, (What's this?) I bought this as a gift for my husband. He is the one who does all the electronics in the house so I wasn't really sure what I was looking for in an entertainment system. If you are looking for great sound, lots of options this is it. I'll have to say that the sound and output this entertainment system puts out is like being in the movies. Everything you can think of is on this one component. It's got a nice look and wasn't that hard to set up. I'm starting to be a SAMSUNG lover because I have been happy with the quality. The arrival time was great. I would have only wanted to have the "gift" option for this, but mananged to be a gift.
Blu ray player is inconsistent, Samsung custom care is terrible !!!!!, (What's this?) I purchased this player prior to x-mas. Have growing family so the entertainment center keeps shrinking, as far as quality audio components. Anyways, Decided on this unit as the best compromise. Samsung has always seemed to do well and our flat screen is a Samsung and always treated us well. The audio portion of the unit was very well for the price. Adding the 7.1 channel to the top of the towers with rotatable speakers added to the quality of the sound. The subwoofer was very minimal. The wireless rear speakers were small and very nice. The rear main unit is the wireless receiver and it is the largest portion. Easy to hide and install. Make sure there is an outlet nearby. I have had many wireless rear audio systems and I must say this was truly one of the clearest and almost never failed to connect.
HERE is the main problem, I would think that a new Samsung tv and blu ray player would be great together.
Bang for the buck!!!, (What's this?) I did quite a bit of research before making this purchase. I considered all makes and models of receiver/speaker combinations. Ultimately, I ended up choosing the Onkyo TX-NR609 receiver and Onkyo SKS-HT870 7.1 speaker system.
DVD player went bad twice, A couple of years ago I bought the Samsung HT-WZ410. My first home theater system. Within a few months the carousel quit loading disks or the would freeze (even on brand new disks). We sent it back and it was replaced fairly promptly. I figured we just got a lemon the first time and the new one would be fine, but no. The same thing happened again, but after warranty this time. Makes me a bit hesitant to purchase similar products from Samsung.
Unit defect and Poor customer Service, I bought this 7.1 Channel HT-D6730W/ZA in April 2011, it worked well (Except smart hub hung up sometimes) for 7 months and then I got a problem. The bluray player was automatically turn on and off in middle of watching movies, without us doing manually anything with it. It is connected to HDMI with My Samsung TV (UN46D6400), When talked to support, he asked me to TURN OFF ANYNET option, I did it both on TV and my Bluray player, Then also I am having the same problem. I sent this unit to service center and received it back after 20 days, and what I found was disappointment, the problem still exists. After spending another 2 hours with customer service, I ended up sending the unit back. They neither want to send us new unit nor repairing it properly. It is so annoying to see your player turns on and off every second especially when you spend around 800$ for this.
Dead out of the box, (What's this?) Soo just like anyone else who drops $600 on a new home theater system, I was excited to get this baby up and running when FedEx showed up at the door! After spending 2 hours getting all the wires just how I wanted them, the big moment comes to hear the explosion of sounds in my ears. I press the power button, it starts loading, and freezes with the words HELLO on the front panel. Called Samsung support, they say its defective. Samsung is ridiculous and makes YOU pay shipping to send the unit to them even though its brand new and dead out of the box! Fortunately, Amazon is amazing! They immediately send you a replacement and give you a paid shipping label to send the old one back! Hopefully I'll be lucky with round 2.
Still setting up, not hooked up yet, but feel compelled to write a review, I have no idea how this thing works or sounds or displays cos' it's not hooked up yet. But I want to give my comments.

Good - finishing is beautiful, shiny but not cheap.
Good - lots of features, probably more than I'll ever need.

Bad - instructions for assembling front speakers could be better, nowhere does it say loop the super long speaker wires through the base bottom!
Bad - main unit's power cord is so tightly locked in by the plastic piece that the cord's plastic is cut into, luckily no bare wire is exposed.
Bad - tall speakers' attached wires are so sharply bent that I worry if there's internal damage and if sound is affected negatively.
Bad - tall speakers can't be shorten which means they're floor speakers ONLY, I have this 18" tall IKEA base cabinet (10-feet long) and I'm forced to place these giant speakers onto it. Not cool.
Bad - tall speakers don't stand straight up. And its feet can't allow you to adjust the height to offset this.
Bad - rear surround speakers are disproportionally small when compared to their giant front counterparts, I wish they make all 4 upright speakers of somewhat the same height. Now, I need to fork out some money for 2 rear stands.

Don't know yet - I hope the rear wireless receiver does NOT require direct vision to the main unit for connection, cos' I can hide the receiver and all wiring behind my seating.

    I'll update this once I test-listen everything.

  • Includes built-in iPod dock.Samsung Smart Blu-ray.Built in Wi-Fi.Wireless receiver for rear speakers.Captivating 2D & 3D.This product is 3D-related. To help you get a great 3D experience, use the checklist below to ensure you have everything you need. 3D viewing requires:

A DisplayFirst, you'll need a 3D-ready display--whether it's a 3D HDTV, 3D projector, or 3D computer monitor. These displays have more processing power than standard 2D models for displaying 3D images in rapid succession. A SourceYour display may be ready for 3D playback, but you'll still need a device to read 3D content. This can be a cable box with a subscription to a 3D channel, a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, or a PlayStation 3 system. 3D Content3D content--the actual entertainment, in other words--will be played back using the source mentioned above, whether it's a 3D broadcast from your cable provider, a 3D Blu-ray Disc, or a 3D video game. 3D GlassesFor now, the vast majority of 3D HDTVs require glasses for 3D viewing. Many use powered "active shutter" glasses, others polarized "passive" glasses. You'll need one pair per viewer, and they'll have to be compatible with your display, whether they're the same brand, or a pair of "universal" glasses designed to work across brands.

American Red Cross FR150 Microlink Solar-Powered, Self-Powered AM/FM/Weatherband Portable Radio with Flashlight and Cell Phone Great little radio

Am Station, (What's this?) The reception of the A.M. stations went dead when I released the tuning wheel. E-mailed the company, they said that I should send the radio to a repair shop. That was not helpful at all.
Great for power outages., (What's this?) This worked pretty good in our last power outage. We could receive several radio stations (not just the local one) and the weatherband to keep up with what was going on with the storms. It takes a bit to wind it completely up. Worth having something that doesn't have to have batteries to work.
    Super cool, (What's this?)
American Red Cross FR150, (What's this?) I bought the radio for emergencies, but I do listen to it in the house and I get a good reception. I like the size and love the color, good flash light. Overall a good emergency radio.
disappointed, (What's this?) This item was disappointing because it broke one week after I received it. I would think it would be made stronger to last longer. It is also, quite small. I was just totally unhappy with this product.
Small, solid, simple to use., (What's this?) I bought the FR150 a few years ago for our home emergency kit. I spent a little time with it when I first got it to make sure it worked and then threw it in the emergency kit and forgot about it. I pulled it out a few days ago in preperation for Hurricane Irene and made sure that it worked. No problem. This little thing is solid. I was glad I had it when the power went out and we lost our land line and eventually our cell phone service. Thanks to 790AM in Norfolk, VA and the FR150 we were fully informed of the position and severity of the storm and any local flooding and damage.
You get what you pay for, This is a nicely styled item but as a radio for AM or FM, flashlight, NOAA Weather Radio or cell phone charger it is really lacking. The flashlight is just barely adequate although it is better than being in the dark I suppose. The radio is impossible to tune clearly, it drifts off the station constantly, and the audio is distorted and tinny. The instructions for cell phone charging indicate that you should turn the crank two times per second for 10 to 15 minutes to get approximately 1 minute of talk time on a typical phone. I didn't try that but my guess would be that the crank mechanism would break before you'd ever get the phone charged enough to use it. This is a nice novelty item but it's usefulness is limited. I think it would be better to have a conventional flashlight, radio and a stock of spare batteries.
a hurricane is on the way and it does not hold a charge, (What's this?) I bought this a few years ago in case of an emergency and put it on a shelf.
Big mistake. I should have tested it first.

Hurricane Irene will be here tomorrow.
I tried to charge it using the crank. Nothing.
I tried to charge it overnight connected to a usb port on my PC.

Plugged in to the PC, the radio works.

When unplugged after "charging", the radio does not work.

I called their 800 number today, Saturday. No one is there and they sell emergency products but only have support M - F 9 to 5.
I suspect the battery is no good. But, it might also be the charging circuits.
What good is an emergency device if it does not work?

The instruction manual is useless. All it contains is instructions on how to charge it and how to turn it on. (Turn the on switch.)
    No troubleshooting.

    UPDATE:
Based on the manufacturer's response, I wish that I could lower the rating from 1 star.
I got an email response from the manufacturer 5 days after I contacted them by email. This is their idea of fast customer response for a device designed for an emergeny.

They suggested that the problem was a faulty rechargeable battery and that I should buy a replacement from their web site.
Great little radio, (What's this?) Got this radio for my husband, actually thinking it would not be that great, but he really liked it! A few days later, I ordered it for my brother, who also liked it. Both orders were from Amazon.
It won't charge your phone, (What's this?) If you're thinking about buying this to charge your cell phone, don't do it. It will not charge your cell phone.

Sony HTSS380 3D Home Theater System

    New but not improved..., (
Good Sound, (What's this?) Bought this home theater system for my daughter for Christmas. She really does like it a great deal. Has good sound and would recommend to other customers.
shipping, (What's this?) hi dear, is there a problem with this item? is about the shipping, why this is not shipping yet? i need this item with me fast because i'm leaving next week out of the country and i'm going to take it with me.
Name is not accurate, (What's this?) Doesn't play blu ray disks. It is only an amazing surround sound system. Blu ray player sold separately:(. Had to purchase a separate blu ray player after I got it out of the packaging. The sound it great and everything actually runs through this using HDMI cables.
Sony HTSS380 HT-SS380 3D Blu-ray Disc Matching Surround Sound System, (What's this?) - Sounds great
    - Fills the whole room really well
    - Love the surround sound
    - Love the base
    - Love the radio and easy integration of Sony TV, PS3 and Logitech Revue

Definitely recommend it. Great product for the price.
Excellent quality for this price, (What's this?) Hi,
I purchased this product during the Nov 2011 Thanksgiving deals and I found it to be extremely convincing. Mine is a medium sized hall and I connected this Home Theater system with my Sony TV and PS3, its amazing and I would recommend this to anyone looking for good experience at this price. You certainly have better products in market plus better features but i doubt if they give it to you at this price.

    Pros:
    - Excellent packing - I had no problem taking stuff out and connecting.
    - Easy interface with my TV and PS3; being Sony helps.
    - Good movie experience with woofer and Surround.
    - Comes with a handy Ipod/Iphone dock.

    Cons:
    - Speakers could have been a little small & trendy, they look like desktop speakers.
    - So many switches on remote that makes you feel like a robot.
    - No HDMI cables; you have to buy them separately.
Great sounding audio., (What's this?) Not much to say here, this is a nice sounding device for the money. Stylish and with three HDMI inputs you can connect most devices without hassle. I guess if there was one downside it's that the sound has a bit more treble out of the box and the sub woofer isn't powered. Some movies, like The Matrix with its heavy bass, make it reverberate a bit too much.
Sound OK, little disappointed., (What's this?) I was originally looking for a new quality receiver to hook up my older speakers to get more HDMI connections.

After reading board review, I bought this HT-SS380 from Amazon during labor day sales for under $250, what a deal
(It has receiver, speakers and Ipod/Iphone dock).

I received it yesterday, opened the box and realized it comes with TINY little speakers. My fault for not checking at the spec in Amazon,I only looked at the nice photo &receiver spec; but I overlooked it cleary says Speaker Dimensions: 3.3 x 8.6 x 3.7 in.

The speakers are light and flimsy,1bs, how could it counds good?! The sound is low to medium, not solid, the quality is not good enough for an audiophile. Even my existing 5 years old Panasonic stereo system sounds more solid than this.

I immediately process return today (first time ever for me to return a product I bought from Amazon in years), and
ordered Sony STRDH820 7.2 Channel 3D AV Receiver, hopefully it not disappoint me.
Home theater, (What's this?) It's a good product without the DVD player. There are others in the market for 20.00 dollars more with DVD PLAYER
    Overall good sound.
Sony 3D, (What's this?) Was a breeze to set up, worked first time without a headache and produces a very good surround sound experience. Would recommend to all but the most discrimanting of theather buffs.

    StarTech.com MU6MMSRA Slim 3.5mm to Right Angle Stereo Audio Cable - M/M (6 Feet)

"Slim" applies to cable only, (What's this?) I bought this cable with the intent of using it with my iPhone. I'm thinking that when they described this as "slim" they were talking about the cable outside diameter itself. I used a Dremel tool to trim the straight end's plastic sheath to match the metal connector's outside diameter in order to fit the iPhone. If you don't have a coarse file or rotary cutting tool, it may be more of a hassle, though. Otherwise, it works like it's supposed to.
Works well enough, (What's this?) I was looking to replace the lost cable for my noise canceling headphones. This is a bit thicker cable than what I was replacing, but seems to work well so far.
EXCELLENT, (What's this?) I TRIED 3 DIFFERENT CABLES TO CONNECT HEADPHONES TO MY COMPUTER. THIS BY FAR IS THE BEST AT A REASONABLE PRICE. SOUND GREAT AND ARE VERY STURDY WITH A SOLID CONNECTION. THEY ARE FLEXIBLE WHILE STILL WITH A SUBSTANTIAL FEEL.
As ordered, (What's this?) This was a replacement cord for a Panasonic noise cancelling headset. The cord works great, its sturdy and just as I expected it.
Great for the car. (Altima with TuneLink Auto), (What's this?) I used this to hook up the AUX port of my Altima factory stereo to the New Potato TuneLink Auto(Bluetooth). This works great as the angled cord doesn't stick out too far off the front of the unit, and I was able to push the thinner cord in between the unit and the dashboard. Audio quality of the cord is good. The 6 ft cord is nice as it give you some length. 3ft isn't that long, especially if you are running it in any way.
Great for Iphones, (What's this?) This cable is great for people with iphones with a case that prevents cables with larger heads to connect without taking the case off.

VideoSecu 4 Black Universal Satellite Speaker Mounts / Brackets for Walls and Ceilings 1VE

    Worked perfectly for me., (
Worked better than I expected., (What's this?) Excellent speaker mounts, worked better than I thought they would and with a price like this. Easy to install, and very customizable to the application that you choose.
Perfect!!, (What's this?) I was surprised at how nice these were and they offer many mounting configurations! These were sturdy enough for mounting my polk rm6750 surround speakers and held there position when pointed. If your speakers are at the upper end of the manufactures weight limit and you plan to point them any direction but straight you may need to look for another product. These were discrete with the extension removed and were perfect for my application, I would order again.
These mounts are okay, but not great., (What's this?) I bought these mounts for my new house for my front speakers and center channel. I have a set of mounts for my rear speakers that I purchased from my local box store. They are much better quality and it was quite apparent when mounting them all up. The tubes that go to the mount themselves seem to be very weak and bend when tightening the set screws.
These mount are okay. If you have no other mounts to compare them to then they may seem great. Overall a decent set but don't be fooled into thinking these are as good as the more expensive units at (insert box store here.) Are they 5x better for 5x the price? Heck no. So please buy accordingly.
Look no further, (What's this?) Loved these sturdy little mounts. One has the option to make them shorter if need be, which is what we did.
    Great value, (What's this?)
So-so, (What's this?) The mounts themselves are excellent. In fact, they're perfect. The down side is that the kit did not come with the one piece I truly needed in order to mount my keyhole-mounted speakers--the keyhole nut. It came with round lock nuts, but nothing that would fit inside a keyhole mount. So sadly, it's off to the hardware store I go.
Great Value., (What's this?) Inexpensive, lightweight, adjustable, multiple configuration options, all hardware included. These are even better than the ones sold at my local retailer for 10 times the price.
Great buy., (What's this?) These speaker wall mount brackets exceeded my expectations. Perfect. Easy to install and adjust, and the price was right. I could easily secure my keyhole mount speakers to them. Great buy.
Great Mounts, (What's this?) I was a little hesitant about these being made out of plastic, but after reading some of the other reviews I decided to go ahead and order them. I was pleasantely suprised! These little mounts work great for holding up my Samsung home theater speakers. Unfortunately, the screws to hang the speakers on were just a little too short, but it was nothing that a quick trip to the hardware store couldn't fix! I actually plan on ordering a couple more for another project.

3.5mm Stereo Male To Male Cable 12 ft.

Good investment, (What's this?) This cable does everything, and comes as described.
Works perfectly, (What's this?) I bought this to plug my laptop to my T.V and it works perfectly.
Awesome cable!, (What's this?) I can't believe that this cable was inexpensive and functions great! 12 feet of cable for a couple of bucks?!! What a great deal. Walmart wanted $8 for a 3 foot cable. This was a great deal and it is great quality.
    PLUG "N" PLAY, (What's this?)
WORSE, (What's this?) I wanted to rate it 0/5. But its not allowing me to enter 0. That's why it's 1/5.

Not working at all. It messed up my laptop and my cell.
Great Product!, (What's this?) This is a great product for the price. You can't go wrong when it's under $3. If for whatever reason you don't like it, just buy something else. You didn't pay an arm and a leg. Anyways, I use this cable when I connect my netbook to the TV. It works great. The audio is nice and clear. No need to pay full price when you can have a bargain like this.
works for me, (What's this?) A plug is a plug works fine for me. Appears well enough made. No surprises. A good and useful cable I needed and, as usual found at Amazon.
Good Price, (What's this?) Can't beat the price and the shipping was right on time...early actually...works like a charm and highly recommend if you find yourself needing to extend whatever it is you're extending...
Product is of a low quality, (What's this?) I took a chance purchasing this very inexpensive cable. Unfortunately, the quality is very low. Any time you touch or move the cable, particularly the ends near the connectors, I get static.
Good Product, (What's this?) The stereo male to male cable works well and is 12 feet long so no stretching to connect devises. Arrived on time with Amazon.

Mediabridge - Toslink Cable - Optical Digital Audio Cable - 10ft

Good Product, (What's this?) Fast shipping. Product looks good. I'm satisfied with my purchase. I don't believe in super premium cables that "make your music dance..." This is the right product at the right price.
Mediabridge Toslink Cable, (What's this?) The seller was prompt in processing the order and arrived quickly.

I purchased two cables (one for input and another for the output ports) and did not have any problems with the connectors not fitting into the Toslink port in either device. Both cables clicked and locked into the ports on both devices. The cables were used to connect my MacPro workstation to a Behringer DEQ2496 digital audio processor. The 10' cables gives me plenty of distance to position the two units in their ideal location in my setup. I would buy them again.
Great Cables, great price, (What's this?) I've used Mediabridge cables for a few years now. They are the only ones I buy for my home theater. Great cables at a great price. Highly recommended. Quality construction, never had an issue.
works as advertised, (What's this?) The only issue with the product was a result of personal ignorance.
Nice cable, (What's this?) Good heavy gauge wire, nice grips, looks to be made very well, and came in packaging that tells me they care about all aspects of making a quality product. Connects and sounds great. I strongly recommend this wire.
Mediabridge 10 ft. Optical DA Cable, (What's this?) I have an older receiver that doesn't have HDMI input so I purchased this cable to send audio to my receiver. I removed the fiber tip protectors and installed the cable within a few minutes. The cable fit nicely into my optical fiber output on my TV and optical fiber input on my receiver. I enjoy the functionality of this cable and now I have a great surround system to support my big screen TV.
No Dolby 5.1 with this cable, (What's this?) Couple reviewers referred to potential problems with 5.1. I can definitely say that 5.1 did NOT work with this cable. Not only did i get ZERO level for the rear speakers, the overall sound was SUBSTANTIALLY more muddled and less vibrant compared to good old-fashioned RCA audio cables when doing a straight-ahead A/B comparison between the two set-ups (remotely switching between the two). Very disappointing.
Great cable value, (What's this?) gGreat cable value that works well with my Samsung products. I don't see any difference between it and the one I spent 3 or 4 times more for the brand name that I used on my other TV.
Great product and a great price, (What's this?) This is a great price for a high quality product. It is an HDMI cable that can handle 3d and I believe the construction is of high quality and I used it to run my 3d blu ray through my receiver and back to the TV for high quality 3d picture. It is amazing what Best Buy charges for these cables...this price point is fine. I bought Mediabridge across the board and have yet to have any problems with any of their cables.
works with Samsung TV and Focusrite Saffire, (What's this?) I use the Mediabridge Toslink cable to connect a Samsung UN46B6000 to a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 audio interface and it works fine. The cable has great built quality with durable material. I believe it will last a long time with no worry. I have used other Mediabridge cables and I like their quslity as well.

Onkyo TX-NR809 THX Certified 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black)

    not good, (What's this?)
Great receiver, when it works..., (What's this?) **01/15/2012 Update**
Well, I'm now on my second TX-NR809. The first one was DOA. The replacement I received worked perfectly for about two months, but sometime in the last week, the center channel has died on it. I replaced the cable, tried different speakers, different power outlets--you name it; the receiver's center channel output is consistently putting out no sound (via the "Level Calibration" setup menu--when "Center" is selected, there's absolutely no sound--and yes, I tried multiple speakers).

To add insult to injury, Onkyo has disabled the contact form on their support website "due to the holidays". According to Amazon's website, I'm supposedly still within my return window, and I've started that process.

This is a great receiver--when it works. I'm getting tired of *working* on my home theater system, and not being able to sit back and enjoy it. Plus, lugging around a 50lb receiver to ship back gets old. To say I'm disappointed with Onkyo's quality control would be an understatement.

    **Original review**
This is a great receiver, once I got a working unit in-hand. The first unit I received, I foolishly (and painstakingly) hooked up every cable to, then powered it on. Bad idea. Hit the power button, and the receiver went "click...click...click", and so on. It would never power on, and nothing ever appeared on the display. I tried multiple power outlets and cables, to no avail. Finally, I had to set up an RMA with the seller, after it was decided by tech support that the unit I had received had a bad power supply.

Fast forward a few days, and I have my replacement receiver in hand. This time, I had enough sense to make sure it would power one BEFORE I hooked everything up. Sure enough, it worked like a charm. With a smile on my face, I proceeded to hook up all my equipment again. Happily, everything worked perfectly upon completion of my set up.
Onkyo TX-NR809 was a great purchase, (What's this?) I upgraded from a previous Onkyo TX-NR unit so that I could get the 3D capability, and I'm glad I did. I want to add HD radio in the near future and this allows me to do so. I've been very happy with this unit.
Wonderful sound but the network UI is weak, I love this receiver but the UI for DLNA and other network playback is relatively weak. Almost not useable if you have a lot of music.

The audio quality, which is what I really care about, is great. The receiver has the umph to deal with larger dynamic range, such as during Beethoven's 9th symphony and Camille Saint-Saens 3rd symphony (the latter being my favorite test of audio systems)

The receiver has tons of inputs and can be configured in many ways. The Audyssey system seems to do great at setting the sound stage and speaker balances.

Plus, the networked remote via oRemote (an iPhone/iPad app) adds significant flexibility. It also helps simplify the complexity of all of the options the receiver supports. (There are so many that the receiver's remote actually has multiple modes for its own buttons, let alone the fact that it supports other devices such as your DVD player, TV, etc.)

Oh, and there is actual mass behind this receiver. From its construction, it is easy to believe that it can actually operate at power for extended periods. That, and its audio quality make it highly recommended. I am sure you can find cheaper units, but all of the ones I listened to also sounded "cheaper" - if sound quality is important, I can recommend the Onkyo 809. Just be sure to use an AppleTV or similar device for your network playback as the UI is weak.

I would always opt for a weak UI with great sound over a great UI with weak sound - especially in my receiver/amplifier.
Happy with it so far, Purchased it about a month ago. So far no problems whatsoever. Works as claimed in manual. Manual though could be more detail. Not tested all functions yet, but main functions works perfect including WiFi through USB (you'll need WiFi USB dongle for this). Would by it again and will recommend it.
Nice and Powerful, but NET feature is slooooow, (What's this?) I replaced a Denon 2311CI with this receiver. I'm happy so far (10 days). Sound quality is the same as the Denon (Onkyos are supposedly brighter than Denons). I played the same three or four tracks before swapping them; they sound the same to my non-audiophile ears. The Onkyo plays louder, as expected since it's 135wpc vs the 105 of the Denon.

I use it to drive a pair of Polk Audio RTI A7s in bi-amp mode (same as the Denon). So far I like it a lot; it's much more feature-laden than the Denon, but not daunting at all if you are tech/AV oriented. I read the manual just in case (it's a PDF file on a CD-Rom).

The one thing that is not working well is the NET feature. I'm using the Onkyo UWF-1 wireless adapter, it's connecting to my wireless G network (18mps U-verse) through DHCP, I configured Vtuner, Pandora, and Last FM, but man, using it is so frustrating it's barely usable. Is it just me? Not sure. First of all, clicking though the radio options takes forever, then half the time it says there are no items in my favorite Vtuner folder (there are); once it accesses them, had the time it says it cannot play them (no explanation given). Even when it does play them, the interface is in color but fairly ugly. In comparison, the Pandora interface on my Samsung Blu-ray DVD player is phenomenal (and fast, and reliable).

The one thing I miss from the Denon is the built-in HD radio; since the NET feature is a dud (please let me know if it's just me, maybe I got a bad 809), I'd love to be able to play the HD radio smooth jazz channel. It worked great on the Denon.

Other than the NET feature, I love this receiver. It sounds great, it's positively massive, it dwarfs the Denon in size and weight (40 lbs vs 26) since it has a massive transformer.

Amazon has a great price on it, with occasional dips that make it an even sweeter deal.

It might also be that the problems I'm having depend on the wireless adapter. I'll try using an Apple Airport Express as a wireless bridge and connect it to the Onkyo via the Ethernet jack. It might solve my slow network features.
Works...Till it dies..., (What's this?) Bought it. Hooked it up. Loved it.

That's how these things should work. It is pushing a 5.1 line of W-Series Klipsch and an Energy M8 sub. Super system in all ways, movie watching is a dream on the Epson 8350 projector.

Until one day, when listening to music on STEREO mode, only 2.1, the unit clicked off. When I tried to turn it back on it only said "Check SP Wire". This is common, but not after 3 months of the same setup working without issue. So I checked the manual and it said, unplug for an hour and try again. It is when I tried again (took everything out the back first of course), that the unit sparked and smoked and died in my hands.

I take no issue to a smart kill switch, but when you follow instructions and the unit practically blows up in your house, well my friends, something is fishy.

To top off the problem, Onkyo will not cover the cost to ship this thing to a service spot. They want me to pay for a 50 lb receiver in shipping that died because I FOLLOWED THEIR INSTRUCTIONS!!!

This is the downfall of this product. When it works it's great, but in a split second, your enjoyment can be killed like that...
Used to be a Denon Guy, (What's this?) For the last 10 years I've owned the 3800 series Denons (several different models). So, when I went to purchase a 3D capable plasma, I knew I needed to upgrade the receiver. I immediately went to the Denon AVR3312CI Denon AVR3312CI Integrated Network A/V Surround Receiver. After seeing several reviews that there were issues with the initial firmware for the Denon, I decided to look around at other models. I'm glad I did!

I saw excellent reviews on the Onkyo and for the price decided to give it a try. Since hooking it up 3 months ago, I have not been disappointed. It drives my Paradigm Monitors with better power and clarity than the old Denon did. The sound is absolutely fantastic for both music and movies.
Not Your PaPa's Receiver, (What's this?) I bought this to replace a high end 6 year old Yamaha receiver. I have had many Yamaha's thru the years but the last few years they have not been competitive. For instance they do not support THX any longer, which is a big mistake IMO.

Not too worry, the Onkyo 809 seems to support everything including THX. Bells and Whistles galore and probably the kitchen sink is in the Menus somewhere. :> Construction wise it is equal to any Yamaha I have owned. It sounds terrific, I mean really terrific. The Video processing is a big plus, especially for Netflix or Amazon streaming. My HDTV has never looked better, it is a noticeably better picture when the Onkyo's Video processing is turned on.

Everything works as advertised. The biggest complaint is Onkyo supplies NO paper manual. This is a real travesty as this is one complicated receiver to learn. I had to print the PDF manual on my own printer. Be prepared to spend a lot of time learning how to use all the functions in this Onkyo 809.
She's Real Fine, My 809!, (What's this?) Totally luxuriating in the gorgeous sound from my new 809.....I can't properly review items like the others because I'm a bargain hunter...Haven't bought a new receiver in over 20 years....It's an illness and a way of life.....In a large, tall great room I'm using 4 Bic Venturi 3 way wall speakers with 8 inch woofers mounted up high and an old Infinity powered 1000 watt 15 inch woofer, Bose center speaker.....I bought the receiver for listening to electric jazz and soul music mainly, but, it totally shines as a home theater system......Absolutely silent during quiet sections...Impressive....Then brings it all to life, big time.....I can hear the wall speaker's woofers pumping and the subwoofer thundering and I'm flat loving it everyday....Delicious rich sound!..
....Things I would change?....The buttons are smallish and labeled in a dark color..I keep a little maglite next to it to find the right button in dimly lit times...There is a button for tv/cd and I wish I had separate one for each, I ended up plugging the CD into another input.
.....Letting you know I love my 809....I'm in tall cotton!...
